Hyundai launches Mission to Blue in Livorno to protect marine ecosystem

Hyundai Italy has expanded its Mission to Blue programme to the coastal city of Livorno, following an initial phase in Milan. The initiative, carried out within the Water Defenders Alliance and coordinated by LifeGate, supplies a kit of ten FoamFlex sponges to the Marina Livorno D‑Marin for rapid response to accidental oil and hydrocarbon spills.

FoamFlex, an Italian clean‑tech patent from T1 Solutions, can absorb up to 30 times its weight in oil, is reusable up to 200 times, and can recover the collected oil for the waste‑oil supply chain. Hyundai says each kilogram of the material can capture roughly 6,000 kg of hydrocarbons over its lifetime. The project aims to lessen environmental impact on the Mediterranean, especially near the Pelagos Sanctuary for marine mammals, and aligns with Hyundai’s Creating Shared Value strategy and its broader “Progress for Humanity” sustainability goals.
