Hyundai Motor domestic market share drops to 37.4% amid labor strikes

Hyundai Motor Company experienced a significant decline in its South Korean domestic market share, falling to 37.4% in August 2026. This drop follows prolonged labor strikes and production disruptions, with the company's sales falling 30.2% from the previous month. In contrast, Kia maintained a dominant position with a 50.6% market share, benefiting from a successful wage negotiation that avoided strikes.

Data from January to July 2024 also highlights a shifting consumer preference toward hybrid powertrains in larger vehicle segments. While entry-level models like the Avante and Sonata remain dominated by gasoline engines, higher-priced models show a strong tilt toward hybrid technology. Specifically, the Santa Fe SUV reached a hybrid adoption rate of 79.4%, and the Palisade stood at 71.6%. Industry analysts suggest that as the mass adoption of electric vehicles faces delays, hybrids are becoming the standard for mid-to-large size segments due to their balance of efficiency and convenience.
