Hyundai Motor Group launches Data Flywheel for autonomous driving
Hyundai Motor Group has launched the Data Flywheel platform, designed to accelerate the development of autonomous driving systems through a continuous data loop. The platform utilizes information collected from vehicles to train and validate AI models, which then receive software updates to further refine the system.
Leveraging the combined annual sales of Hyundai and Kia—exceeding 7 million vehicles across 190 markets—the group aims to use large-scale data to identify complex driving scenarios through hard example mining and virtual validation. The architecture includes a shared data environment known as Data Union, involving Hyundai Motor, Kia, Motional, and 42dot.
The group is pursuing two parallel development paths. One utilizes Nvidia platforms, with Level 2+ systems expected in production by the first half of 2028 and Level 2++ variants in the second half. The second path focuses on the proprietary Atria AI system, targeting Level 2++ capabilities in production vehicles by the second half of 2029. Development is being conducted by teams in South Korea and the United States.
