Hyundai Motor Group pilots parking robots at South Korean apartment complex
Hyundai Motor Group has announced a consortium comprising Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Wia, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction to launch a pilot project for autonomous parking robots in residential complexes. The demonstration will take place at the Hillstate The Wave City apartment complex in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, under the South Korean government's smart city regulatory sandbox program.
The project utilizes Hyundai Wia's specialized parking robots, which consist of two thin, wide units (110mm thick) that slide under a vehicle to lift its wheels. Equipped with LiDAR sensors, the robots can identify wheel positions and move vehicles weighing up to 3.4 tons—including SUVs—at speeds of up to 1.2 m/s. Drivers can call their vehicles via kiosks or wall pads after exiting at designated areas.
The consortium aims to increase parking capacity by 20% to 50% within the same footprint, reduce carbon emissions by minimizing idling, and improve safety by separating pedestrian and vehicle paths. Data collected during the pilot, including entry/exit times, waiting times, and success rates, will be used to develop standard operating models and propose improvements to relevant laws and regulations for various building types.
