Hyundai autonomous robot technology demonstrations
Overview
Hyundai Motor Group is conducting various demonstration projects for autonomous robotic technologies in South Korea.
Initial tests focused on maritime applications, where the MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid) autonomous robot was tested aboard the moving vessel Hyundai Dubai. These trials aimed to prove the robot's ability to navigate land-designed technology through the vibrations and uneven surfaces of a sea environment.
Following these maritime tests, the company expanded its demonstrations to urban infrastructure. A consortium including Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Wia, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction has launched a smart parking pilot project at the Hillstate The Wave City apartment complex in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, under the South Korean government's smart city regulatory sandbox program.
The project utilizes specialized Hyundai Wia parking robots—consisting of thin, wide units that slide under a vehicle—equipped with LiDAR sensors. These robots can lift and move vehicles weighing up to 3.4 tons at speeds of up to 1.2 m/s. Drivers can request their vehicles via kiosks or wall pads. Through this pilot, the consortium aims to increase parking capacity by 20% to 50% within existing footprints, reduce carbon emissions by minimizing vehicle idling, and improve safety by separating pedestrian and vehicle paths. Data collected during the project will be used to develop standard operating models and propose improvements to relevant laws and regulations.
