Hyundai Motor sales drop below 300,000 units amid labor strikes

Hyundai Motor Company's global sales fell to 288,574 units in August, marking a 14.2% decrease compared to the same month last year. This represents the first time in 4 years and 7 months that monthly sales have dropped below the 300,000-unit threshold.

Domestic sales in South Korea experienced a particularly sharp decline of 41.1%, reaching a 10-year low of 34,333 units. Hyundai attributed this significant drop to production disruptions caused by a 60-hour labor strike during wage negotiations, as well as consumer demand shifting toward upcoming new models like the Grandeur and Avante.

Industry estimates suggest the labor action resulted in a production shortfall of approximately 55,200 vehicles. While a tentative wage agreement was recently approved by union members, the company's ability to recover sales depends on how quickly it can clear the production backlog and meet demand for new vehicle releases.
