Hyundai Motor union launches first full-day strike in 10 years
The Hyundai Motor labor union has launched its first full-day, eight-hour strike in ten years following a breakdown in wage negotiations. Approximately 39,000 union members, including both production and office workers, are participating in the walkout. The strike has halted production lines at Hyundai plants in Ulsan, Jeonju, and Asan for a combined 16 hours.
Key union demands include a 50% increase in productivity-based bonuses, the reinstatement of dismissed workers, and an extension of the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 62. Workers also expressed concerns regarding job security in the face of increasing automation and artificial intelligence.
Hyundai management has rejected these demands, stating they fall outside the scope of current wage negotiations and lack a legal or reasonable basis. The company noted its significant cash reserves but maintains that the requests are not acceptable.
Simultaneously, the Kia labor union has secured the right to strike and is planning partial walkouts, which could further disrupt Hyundai Motor Group's operations. Industry analysts warn that prolonged production disruptions could lead to a loss of approximately 55,200 vehicles this year and cumulative revenue losses exceeding 2.3 trillion won, potentially impacting the group's global market share.
