Hyundai Motor workers vote overwhelmingly for strike in South Korea

South Korea’s Hyundai Motor union announced that 86.65% of its 39,668 registered members voted in favour of strike action, with 92.03% of participants supporting the move (34,371 votes). The workers are demanding a monthly wage increase of 149,600 won, a performance bonus equal to 30% of the previous year’s net profit, and an extension of the retirement age to 65.

The vote follows 11 rounds of salary and collective‑bargaining talks since May that have failed to produce an agreement. The dispute will be referred to the National Labor Relations Committee for mediation on June 25, after which the union can legally commence a strike if no settlement is reached.
