Hyundai Translead increases Illinois investment to $600 million

Hyundai Translead, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co., has announced an expanded investment plan for its new manufacturing operations in Will County, Illinois. The company will now invest approximately $600 million (roughly €536 million) to establish two facilities, repurposing the former Lion Electric bus facility in Channahon and a nearby Caterpillar plant in Joliet.

The increased commitment adds approximately $150 million and 1,250 jobs to the company’s original March announcement. The total project is now expected to create 3,750 full-time positions. This expansion includes the addition of a third production shift to meet growing customer demand and improve logistics for the company’s Midwest dealer network.

To support the regional workforce, the State of Illinois is investing in a new Manufacturing Training Academy at Joliet Junior College to equip workers with advanced manufacturing skills. Operations at the sites are expected to begin by 2027.
