IAEA predicts global nuclear power use could triple by 2060

Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced in an annual report to the United Nations General Assembly that global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060. This projected growth is expected to be driven by increasing electrification, the expansion of AI-powered data centers, and a growing demand from technology companies for reliable, carbon-free energy.

In 2025, over 400 operating reactors in more than 30 countries produced 10% of the world's electricity and approximately 25% of its low-carbon electricity. Currently, more than 60 new reactors are under construction worldwide.

Grossi also addressed significant geopolitical security concerns. He highlighted the unprecedented threats to nuclear safety posed by the war in Ukraine and noted the growing nuclear program in North Korea, which lacks IAEA oversight. Regarding Iran, Grossi stated that the technical work required for a diplomatic agreement has been completed, but he urged a return to the negotiating table to ensure sustainable verification by IAEA inspectors.
