IAEA refers Iran nuclear non-compliance to UN Security Council

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors has passed a resolution to refer Iran’s nuclear non-compliance issues to the United Nations Security Council. The resolution, proposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, follows findings of undeclared uranium at several locations within Iran.

The vote resulted in 23 countries in favor, including Japan, while Russia and China voted against the measure. This marks the first time since 2006 that the IAEA Board of Governors has moved to refer Iran's nuclear program compliance issues to the Security Council.

Despite the resolution, the involvement of Russia and China as permanent members of the Security Council with veto power makes the likelihood of new sanctions or specific enforcement actions low. The Iranian delegation in Vienna has strongly criticized the move, labeling the resolution as a political measure lacking consensus.
