Ian Potter State Theatre to reopen six months early

The Ian Potter State Theatre at Arts Centre Melbourne is set to reopen on October 3, finishing its first major refurbishment since 1984 six months ahead of schedule. The project is a key milestone of the Victorian Government’s Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation initiative.

The upgrades focus on enhancing accessibility, audience comfort, and technical capabilities while preserving the heritage design by John Truscott. Key improvements include new lifts, additional aisles, and accessible seating across all levels. The venue also received updated heating, cooling, lighting, and sound systems.

Reopening celebrations include the free four-day ‘Housewarming’ event featuring various artists, as well as the world-premiere First Nations-led concert ‘Gugu Dindi Gunyah’. The theatre serves as the home for resident companies such as The Australian Ballet and Opera Australia.
