Melbourne State Theatre renovation and reopening
Overview
The Ian Potter State Theatre at Arts Centre Melbourne is scheduled to reopen following its first major refurbishment since 1984. The project, part of the Victorian Government’s Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation, was completed six months ahead of schedule and within budget.
Led by NH Architecture and Snøhetta, the renovation focused on preserving the venue’s historic aesthetic, including its original hand-painted curtain and crimson and gold color scheme. Functional upgrades include improved acoustics through new timber flooring, updated heating, cooling, lighting, and sound systems, as well as enhanced accessibility via new lifts and seating.
Reopening celebrations include a four-day ‘Housewarming’ event and the world-premiere First Nations-led concert ‘Gugu Dindi Gunyah’. The theatre continues to serve resident companies such as Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet.
