IATSE condemns Supreme Court ruling narrowing Voting Rights Act

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that narrows the scope of Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, limiting how challenges to redistricting and other voting‑system practices can be pursued. In her dissent, Justice Elena Kagan warned the decision “threatens a half‑century’s worth of gains in voting equality.”

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), representing more than 170,000 technicians, artisans and craftspersons in the entertainment industry across the United States and Canada, denounced the ruling. IATSE said the weakening of voting‑rights protections harms working people by undermining political representation that shapes labor standards, workplace safety, collective‑bargaining rights and arts funding. The union urged its members to stay informed about voter registration, access requirements and related legislative developments, emphasizing that protecting the Voting Rights Act aligns with its commitment to equity and inclusion.
