Ibama investigates oil stains on Rio's Ipanema beach

The Brazilian environmental agency Ibama collected six samples of oil‑stained material found on Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro between posts 8 and 9 on Friday, October 10. The operation was coordinated by the National Center for Environmental Emergencies and Climate (CENEAC) and the samples were sent to the Ladetec laboratory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro for analysis.

Other agencies joined the response: the Chico Mendes Institute reported similar residues on Praia Grande in the Arraial do Cabo marine reserve; the State Environment Institute (Inea) continues to monitor the Rio coastline; and the Navy’s Port Authority inspected the shore, finding no oil in the water. So far, no evidence of contamination justifies restricting beach swimming, though authorities advise the public to avoid direct contact with any petroleum pellets on the sand. The agencies await laboratory results to determine the material’s composition and origin.
