Latin American cities adjust urban transport fares
Several municipalities in Latin America are implementing changes to urban public transport fares due to economic pressures and fuel costs.
In Ibarra, Ecuador, the municipal council approved a measure to maintain urban bus fares at 0.35 USD until December 2026. To offset rising diesel costs, the municipality will provide a compensation of approximately 912,738 USD to four transport operators. This decision aims to protect roughly 130,000 daily users from price hikes.
In San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina, new transport tariffs went into effect on September 18. The updated rates vary by route, with the standard city fare set at $1,477.11 and higher rates for longer journeys, such as the route to León at $2,363.11. Additionally, the local council is reviewing a request for a 3.9% bimonthly fare increase.
In Cobán, Guatemala, the municipality has implemented a temporary increase in both urban and extra-urban bus fares due to rising fuel prices. The increase adds Q2.00 for adults and Q1.50 for children and students, effective through November 30, 2026.
