Quito urban transport fare increase

Overview

The Quito Metropolitan Council approved an ordinance to increase urban public transport fares from $0.35 to $0.40, effective January 1, 2027. To mitigate the immediate impact on users, the municipality will provide approximately $23 million in economic compensation to transport operators through the end of 2026. This subsidy is intended to cover rising costs, such as the removal of diesel subsidies.

The fare increase is contingent upon operators meeting specific service and technology standards, including real-time tracking and integrated collection systems. For electric or low-emission vehicles that meet certain technical criteria, the fare may rise to $0.45. The decision has faced criticism from opposition members and citizens who argue the measure lacks service quality guarantees and burdens residents.
