Ekrem İmamoğlu corruption trial resumes in Silivri
The corruption trial involving 414 defendants, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) President Ekrem İmamoğlu, has resumed after a 40-day hiatus. The proceedings have moved to a newly constructed, large-scale courtroom at the Marmara Closed Prison complex in Silivri.
Imamoğlu faces 142 alleged actions, including charges of forming a criminal organization, bribery, and money laundering. Prosecutors are seeking prison sentences ranging from 828 to 2,352 years. The trial has sparked significant controversy regarding the courtroom's physical conditions and the right to a fair trial. Defense lawyers and family members criticized the massive scale of the new hall, noting that spectators had to use binoculars to see defendants and that communication between lawyers and clients was difficult. Lawyers also described the courtroom layout as violating the principle of face-to-face interaction.
Imamoğlu has contested the court's previous record of him exercising his right to remain silent, asserting that his right to a defense is being obstructed. The court has stated it will allow his defense at an appropriate time and within a reasonable period.
