Ekrem İmamoğlu trial resumes in Silivri with 414 defendants

The second hearing of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) corruption and bribery trial began today in Silivri. The case involves 414 defendants, with 53 currently remaining in detention. The court has previously ruled to maintain the detention of these 53 individuals, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

During the first hearing, which lasted 64 days, significant controversy arose regarding defense rights. İmamoğlu’s legal team is expected to request a formal opportunity for him to present his defense, following a previous session where he was removed from the courtroom after contesting a restricted time limit for his testimony. Defense lawyers have also raised allegations of six critical procedural violations during the initial proceedings.

The prosecution’s 3,900-page indictment charges İmamoğlu with managing a criminal organization and responsibility for 143 separate actions. Prosecutors are seeking prison sentences ranging from 828 to 2,352 years. The court aims to conclude the defense phase and other related proceedings within approximately two months.
