Iberá National Park expands through former Corrientes ranch
The Rincón del Socorro estate in Corrientes, formerly a 12,000-hectare livestock ranch, has been transformed into a major conservation site. Following an initiative by Douglas and Kristine Tompkins, 11,600 hectares were donated to establish Iberá National Park, while the remaining 400 hectares are managed by the Rewilding Argentina Foundation.
The project has focused on restoring native grasslands and reintroducing species that had disappeared from the province due to human activity. A notable success is the giant anteater, which was considered extinct in the region by the mid-20th century. Since the reintroduction program began in 2007, a self-sustaining population of anteaters has been established in the area.
