Iberá National Park conservation and rewilding
Overview
Conservation efforts in Corrientes, Argentina, have transitioned from large-scale land donations to long-term institutional cooperation. The establishment of Iberá National Park was facilitated by the donation of 11,600 hectares from the former Rincón del Socorro livestock ranch, an initiative led by Douglas and Kristine Tompkins.
Following the park’s creation in 2018, the National Parks Administration and the Rewilding Argentina Foundation signed a ten-year Framework Cooperation Agreement. This partnership focuses on ecological restoration, nature tourism, and scientific research. Significant rewilding milestones include the establishment of a self-sustaining giant anteater population and the reintroduction of the jaguar, which has grown to over 50 individuals after being extinct in the province since 1953. Efforts are also expanding to protect species such as the giant otter.
