Iberdrola launches Spain's largest battery storage facility in Extremadura
Iberdrola inaugurated a 58 MW/120 MWh lithium‑ion battery storage plant at the Campo Arañuelo solar complex in Belvís de Monroy, Cáceres, Extremadura. The system consists of two LFP modules of roughly 60 MWh each, linked to the existing Campo Arañuelo I and II photovoltaic plants, allowing excess solar power to be stored and dispatched during peak demand.
The opening was attended by regional officials, including the Extremadura Industry, Energy, Science and Territory Councilor Mercedes Morán, the Government Delegate José Luis Quintana, and Iberdrola executives such as CEO Mario Ruiz‑Tagle and Julio Castro. Ruiz‑Tagle described the project as “pioneering” and essential for firm energy supply as renewable penetration grows. The installation, backed by the Institute for the Diversification and Savings of Energy (IDAE) under the PERTE ERHA programme, reinforces Iberdrola’s strategy to expand storage capacity – the company already operates about 200 MW of batteries nationwide. It also coincides with Iberdrola’s 125‑year anniversary, highlighting the firm’s long‑term investment in Spain’s renewable transition and regional economic development.
