European electricity markets show resilience amid gas price volatility

The European electricity market is navigating significant volatility driven by geopolitical tensions and fluctuating gas prices. According to Eurelectric, wholesale electricity prices in the EU rose by 22.8% between February and August 2026, a much lower increase compared to the 88.4% rise seen in natural gas during the same period. The expansion of renewable energy sources has helped buffer the sector against external shocks, such as the conflict between the United States and Iran.

In Spain, the market has seen extreme price fluctuations. During October 2026, wholesale prices experienced significant swings, with some hours reaching near-zero or even negative values due to high solar generation, while peak hours frequently exceeded 200 €/MWh. This disparity is attributed to the heavy reliance on gas-fired plants during periods of low renewable output and high demand.

Regional differences remain pronounced. Spain has managed to maintain relatively contained prices through wind and solar power, whereas Italy has faced consistently high costs due to its dependence on gas-fired thermal plants. Experts warn that further investment in grid infrastructure, storage, and flexibility mechanisms is necessary to protect the European market from future gas price oscillations.
