Iberian lynx conservation faces roadkill risks and new habitat openings

Efforts to conserve the Iberian lynx face both setbacks and progress in Spain. In Ciudad Real, a lynx cub died after being struck by a vehicle on the CM-4115 highway near the Caracuel lagoon micro-reserve. This incident is part of a recurring pattern on this specific road, where three other lynx have been killed by vehicles in recent years. The body was recovered by Seprona agents and taken to the ‘El Chaparrillo’ Wildlife Recovery Center.

In contrast, the Diputación de Toledo has completed construction of a new 1,560-square-meter habitat at the El Borril estate. The project, which cost 400,000 euros, is designed for environmental education and conservation. A male and a female lynx from the Zarza de Granadilla Breeding Center are expected to arrive shortly, with the site scheduled to open to the public this autumn.
