Iberian lynx conservation in Spain

Overview

Iberian lynx conservation efforts in Spain are currently navigating challenges regarding road mortality and the expansion of protected habitats.

In Ciudad Real, a lynx cub was killed by a vehicle on the CM-4115 highway near the Caracuel lagoon micro-reserve. This incident follows a pattern of roadkill in the area, with three other lynxes killed on that stretch of road in recent years. In response to these recurring deaths, the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha has installed warning signs to alert drivers.

Simultaneously, conservation progress has been noted in Toledo, where the Diputación de Toledo completed a new 1,560-square-meter habitat at the El Borril estate. The 400,000-euro project is intended for conservation and environmental education, with a male and female lynx from the Zarza de Granadilla Breeding Center expected to inhabit the site following its public opening this autumn.
