Ibex 35 falls 0.9% amid oil price drops and geopolitical tension

The Spanish Ibex 35 index opened the Monday session with a 0.92% decline, reaching 18,815 points. The downturn occurred amid international uncertainty regarding crude oil supplies and geopolitical conflicts, including the war in Iran and Houthi military operations in Saudi Arabia.

Oil prices saw a downward trend at the start of European trading. Brent crude fell 1.1% to $115.41 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped 1.7% to $101.53 per barrel. This decline comes despite Houthi forces claiming successful ballistic missile and drone attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia, including the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

In the Spanish corporate sector, Moeve and Galp have ended negotiations to merge their downstream businesses. Additionally, Spain’s National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) has granted first-phase approval for Iberdrola to acquire the electricity marketing business of Contigo Energía in Spain.

Major losers in the Ibex 35 opening included Telefónica (-5.77%), Santander (-5.13%), and Mapfre (-3.28%), while Solaria (+1.57%) and IAG (+1.25%) recorded gains.
