Balearic Islands launch housing inspections and social housing initiatives
The Balearic Islands government has launched a new Housing Inspection Plan for 2026-2027 to combat housing irregularities. The initiative will inspect 74 protected housing developments across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. Inspectors will target fraudulent use of social housing, overcrowding, and substandard living conditions. Violators could face fines of up to 90,000 euros.
In Ibiza, local authorities are taking significant steps to expand the public housing stock. The Ibiza City Council has approved a budget modification of 4.7 million euros to acquire residential buildings and rehabilitate municipal properties in Sa Penya. Additionally, a project near Hospital Can Misses has been approved to create 245 new protected housing units and service accommodations, specifically aimed at helping public employees and residents access affordable housing.
Other regional housing initiatives include Andalusia’s expansion of its housing guarantee program for young people, increasing resources to 80 million euros to facilitate first-time home purchases. In Agüimes, Gran Canaria, the municipality has invested 700,000 euros to purchase land for 1,700 affordable rental homes.
