Illegal settlements and housing initiatives in Ibiza

Overview

Residents in the Es Pratet area of Ibiza have reported a rapid increase in illegal settlements within the Ses Feixes de Vila zone. Community leaders noted that groups arrive with construction materials like cement and gravel to erect makeshift dwellings within 24 hours.

Local concerns include safety and security issues such as fights and threats against residents, as well as the deterioration of public paths. Environmental and health risks have also been highlighted, specifically regarding fire hazards from butane canisters and chainsaw use in vulnerable areas, alongside waste accumulation around the structures.

In response to housing irregularities, the Balearic Islands government has launched a Housing Inspection Plan for 2026-2027. This initiative will inspect 74 protected housing developments across Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, targeting overcrowding, substandard living conditions, and the fraudulent use of social housing. Violators may face fines of up to 90,000 euros.

To address housing needs in Ibiza, the Ibiza City Council has approved a 4.7 million euro budget modification to acquire residential buildings and rehabilitate municipal properties in Sa Penya. Furthermore, a project near Hospital Can Misses has been approved to create 245 new protected housing units and service accommodations intended for residents and public employees.
