Roman amphorae underwater archaeology Formentera Dressel 20 MEDITS campaign

The oceanographic vessel Miguel Oliver has accidentally recovered a collection of Roman artifacts during a research campaign south of Formentera. The find occurred at an exceptional depth of 1,400 meters.

The recovered items include approximately 26 Roman amphorae and 17 boxes of ceramic fragments. The amphorae are primarily of the Dressel 20 type, which were historically used by Romans for the transport of olive oil. The presence of various seals and markings on the pieces provides researchers with potential data regarding their origin, chronology, and ancient commercial networks.

Following the discovery, the materials were transferred to the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera (MAEF) for stabilization and study. The recovery was part of the MEDITS oceanographic and fisheries research campaign, coordinated by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
