Migration surge and fatalities in Balearic Islands

Overview

The discovery of deceased migrants in the waters near Formentera has intensified concerns regarding maritime migration to the Balearic Islands. Following the discovery of a child’s body near Punta Roja, local officials expressed alarm over the arrival of small boats, or ‘pateras’, which they claim are collapsing local services.

Vicent Marí, president of the Consell de Ibiza, called for increased surveillance and defense measures from the central government to manage the influx. Subsequent reports confirmed the recovery of an adolescent’s body south of Formentera, adding to a growing number of fatalities. Authorities noted that this discovery follows the recent recovery of a woman’s body on the coast of Migjorn.

These incidents occurred alongside several successful arrivals of migrant vessels, including one instance where 11 migrants were located in a boat and another where 29 individuals were intercepted. Officials reported that the total number of bodies believed to be linked to migrants found on the Formentera coast this year has reached eleven, with 30 unidentified migrants currently interred at the Sant Francesc cemetery.
