Iblei National Park plans face water quality concerns, Auteri says

Regional deputy Carlo Auteri warned that the Sicilian Basin Authority has confirmed serious environmental and hydro‑geological problems in the area slated for the new Iblei National Park. Auteri’s request prompted the Authority of the Sicilian Hydrographic District to activate its permanent service conference, gather expert opinions and review the Catania administrative court ruling of 9 June 2026 along with park documentation.

The Authority’s report highlights numerous issues: urban discharges into the Anapo River, the condition of wastewater treatment plants in mountain municipalities, insufficient water monitoring, and ongoing risks of landslides, floods and erosion. While many water bodies show acceptable quantitative levels, their chemical status is classified as “not good,” pushing quality targets beyond 2027. The Authority urges verification of discharge permits, assessment of collection and treatment system efficiency, and alignment with water‑protection goals, as well as the identification of remedial measures before any final park decisions are made.
