IBM announces dual-architecture processor for IBM Z and LinuxONE

IBM has announced the development of a first-of-its-kind dual-architecture processor designed for its future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. Unveiled at the Hot Chips conference, this technology is a major milestone resulting from the collaboration between IBM and Arm established in April 2026.

Unlike traditional designs that might place different cores side-by-side, this new architecture allows each individual core to natively and simultaneously execute both Arm and IBM Z instructions. This approach aims to bridge the software gap between IBM's mainframe platforms and the vast Arm ecosystem, which includes over 22 million developers. By providing binary compatibility, the processor could allow Arm-native Linux environments to run alongside z/OS and existing Linux applications on IBM Z without the need for specific recompilation, testing, or maintenance for the s390x architecture.

Built on 2-nanometer technology, the processor is expected to feature 11 high-performance cores operating at speeds exceeding 5.7 GHz. It will also include AI inference accelerators for real-time fraud detection and benefit from IBM's enterprise-grade security, reliability, and scalability features.
