IBM Arm and IBM Z dual-architecture processor development
Overview
IBM has announced the development of a new dual-architecture processor for its future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. Unveiled at the Hot Chips conference, the technology is a result of a collaboration with Arm established in April 2026.
Built on 2-nanometer technology, the processor features 11 high-performance cores capable of natively and simultaneously executing both Arm and IBM Z instructions. This design allows Arm-native Linux environments to run alongside z/OS and existing Linux applications without the need for emulation, recompilation, or maintenance for the s390x architecture.
The processor is designed for enterprise workloads, with clock speeds exceeding 5.7 GHz. It includes specialized hardware such as AI inference accelerators for real-time, in-transaction fraud detection and a dedicated on-chip data processing unit for I/O acceleration. The goal is to combine the Arm software ecosystem with the security and reliability of IBM mainframe infrastructure.
