ICAN urges Norway to reject nuclear weapons investment proposal

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is urging Norway to reject a proposal that would allow the Government Pension Fund Global to invest in companies involved in nuclear weapons production.

A government-appointed committee, led by former central bank governor Svein Gjedrem, recommended opening the fund to companies based in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. Gjedrem argued that protecting Norway’s security provides an ethical justification for such investments.

In response, ICAN’s executive director Melissa Parke stated that investing in nuclear weapons manufacturers during a nuclear arms race would make Norway “complicit” should these weapons be used. ICAN maintains that there is nothing ethical about weapons of mass destruction and urges the government to maintain the current exclusion of these producers.
