Philippines offers ₱50 million bounty for Senator Ronald dela Rosa

The Philippine government has announced a record ₱50 million (approximately $787,000) bounty for information leading to the arrest of Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla classified the senator as “armed and dangerous,” noting that he is a priority target in a nationwide manhunt.

The arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding alleged crimes against humanity committed during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign. The ICC alleges dela Rosa acted as an “indirect co-conspirator” in the murder of at least 32 people between 2016 and 2018. While police estimates for drug war deaths sit at 6,000, human rights groups claim the figure is as high as 30,000.

Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. issued a one-week ultimatum for the senator to surrender. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reportedly ordered police to act “quickly and aggressively” while emphasizing that no lives should be lost during the operation.

Dela Rosa’s legal counsel, Israelito Torreon, has challenged the legal basis of the bounty, arguing that the ICC is a foreign tribunal and that the Philippines withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019. The defense also warned that the reward could expose the senator to “vigilante action.”
