ICC strips Sri Lanka of 2027 Women's Champions Trophy hosting rights
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has stripped Sri Lanka of its hosting rights for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, scheduled for February 2027. The decision stems from ongoing concerns regarding government interference in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
SLC is currently managed by a government-appointed Transformation Committee. The ICC does not recognize politically appointed interim administrations and has subsequently barred SLC representatives from attending ICC Board meetings. While the interim committee is working on governance reforms and constitutional changes to address these issues, the ICC has already indicated that the tournament will be relocated.
Prakash Schaffter, secretary of the SLC Transformation Committee, confirmed the tournament has been moved but noted that the new venue has not yet been finalized. India is reportedly a leading contender to host the six-team event.
The loss of hosting rights also places the Sri Lankan women's team at risk of missing the tournament. Under current rules, the host receives automatic qualification; without it, the team—currently ranked sixth—may fail to qualify alongside the top five ranked nations.
