ICE agent Christian Castro released from Texas jail amid extradition dispute
Christian Castro, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, was released from a Texas jail on Thursday following a legal standoff between Minnesota and Texas. Castro is charged in Minnesota with assault and falsely reporting a crime related to a January 14 shooting in Minneapolis, where he allegedly fired through a door and wounded 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
Minnesota officials sought Castro’s extradition and filed a lawsuit to prevent his release, citing concerns that he might flee to Mexico. However, a federal judge in Brownsville, Texas, denied Minnesota’s request for a temporary restraining order. The judge ruled that Texas Governor Greg Abbott had not yet officially approved or denied the extradition request, meaning no law had been violated.
Under Texas law, a detainee must be released if not extradited within 90 days. Governor Abbott has maintained that he is reviewing the request and investigating whether Castro meets the legal criteria of a fugitive, noting that Castro was reassigned to Texas by his employer rather than fleeing justice. The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly considering federal charges against the agent.
