Gregory Feathers identified as ICE agent in Houston shooting death
Gregory Feathers, an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been identified as the officer involved in the July 7 shooting death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas. Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national who had lived in the United States for 35 years, was traveling to work when the incident occurred.
Investigations by The Texas Tribune and corroborating government documents reveal that Feathers had previously retired from ICE and was rehired within the last two years. While the Department of Homeland Security maintains that the agent acted in self-defense after Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to run over an officer, witnesses traveling in the vehicle have disputed this account, stating no agent was positioned in front of the van.
Feathers has not been charged with a crime. The Harris County District Attorney's Office has opened an investigation into the death, and federal authorities have previously withheld the identities of agents involved in such shootings, citing security concerns.
