ICE agent shot after allegedly assaulting man and daughter in Fresno

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, identified as 32-year-old David Gonzalez, was shot and hospitalized in Fresno, California, following an altercation at a private residence.

According to the Fresno Police Department, the incident occurred early Friday morning after a woman discovered Gonzalez sleeping on her family's front lawn. When her 72-year-old father attempted to ask him to leave, Gonzalez, who appeared to be intoxicated and agitated, allegedly assaulted the man. When the man's daughter tried to intervene, Gonzalez reportedly attacked her as well.

Fearing for their safety, the 72-year-old man used a legally owned firearm to shoot Gonzalez once in the midsection. An off-duty police officer, who is the daughter's boyfriend, arrived at the scene and placed Gonzalez in handcuffs.

Gonzalez remains in serious condition at a local hospital and is in custody facing felony charges, including battery likely to cause great bodily injury and felony vandalism. Authorities stated the homeowner is not facing charges due to the circumstances of the confrontation. Police are continuing to investigate why the agent was in the area at the time of the incident.
