ICE conducts enforcement operations in Central Illinois
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a series of enforcement actions across Central Illinois between October 25 and October 28. The operations included arrests in Springfield, Peoria, East Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that 21 individuals were arrested during these operations. A DHS spokesperson stated that those taken into custody were in the country illegally and possessed criminal histories, including allegations of attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated battery, and fraud.
Local officials in Peoria reported that the Peoria Police Department and the Mayor’s office were not notified of the planned activities. A city spokesperson noted that federal agencies are not required to provide advance notice to local governments before conducting such operations.
Community members and immigrant rights advocates expressed concern regarding the impact of the arrests on the local Latino community. While DHS stated that all detainees receive due process, critics have raised concerns regarding oversight and the potential for racial profiling during federal enforcement actions.
