US ICE enforcement operations
Overview
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted various enforcement actions across different regions. In Queens, New York, a large scale operation in East Elmhurst involved dozens of vehicles and lasted over 10 hours. The grassroots organization Hands Off NYC reported that community members organized to document the activity, though they stated they did not witness any immigrant detentions during the period. The group alleged that agents engaged in dangerous driving and threatened residents who were filming.
In Central Illinois, enforcement actions between October 25 and October 28 resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals in Springfield, Peoria, East Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated the detainees were in the country illegally and had criminal histories involving allegations of attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated battery, and fraud. Local officials in Peoria noted they were not notified of the activities, though federal agencies are not required to provide advance notice to local governments.
