ICE detention facilities receive top ratings amid reports of neglect

An investigation by the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) has found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities are receiving “Superior” inspection ratings despite reports of medical neglect, unsafe conditions, and deaths in custody.

At the Prairieland Detention Facility in Texas, detainees reported issues including poor water quality, inadequate medical care, and violations of religious rights. Despite these claims, the Office of Detention Oversight (ODO) issued the facility its highest possible grade following an inspection where interviewed detainees reportedly expressed satisfaction. POGO’s analysis of 500 ODO inspection reports from fiscal years 2022 through 2026 suggests a trend where reported deficiencies dropped by nearly 70%.

Simultaneously, ICE is expanding its presence through the 287(g) program. In Deep East Texas, local law enforcement agencies are participating in the Task Force and Warrant Service Officer models. These programs delegate authority to state and local officers to perform specific immigration functions, such as executing administrative warrants and identifying undocumented immigrants, under ICE oversight.
