US ICE detention abuse reports continue

Entities: Veronica Escobar · El Paso, Texas · Human Rights Watch · U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) · Camp East Montana

Overview

After months of scrutiny over ICE’s Camp East Montana detention center, new developments emerged in July 2026. A lawsuit filed in Texas on July 19 expanded allegations of solitary‑confinement abuse, medical neglect and multiple suicides, citing the death of Cuban detainee Geraldo Lunas Campos and a Solitary Watch study linking solitary confinement to at least ten of 53 ICE suicides. The accompanying ACLU–Human Rights Watch report described the facility as a “graveyard for living people,” documenting denied medical care, poor food, lack of sunlight, physical assaults by guards and worsening health conditions among detainees.

On July 28 ICE announced it would extend the lease on the El Paso‑based Camp East Montana for at least another year, projecting an additional $776 million in taxpayer costs. The center, which opened in August 2025 and houses roughly 1,600 detainees, has seen three deaths since opening. Congressional critics, led by Rep. Veronica Escobar, renewed calls for closure, referencing the GAO’s June findings of safety and standards violations. ICE maintains that abuse claims are unfounded and that the facility remains essential to its border‑security strategy.

The controversy that began with high‑profile releases and Operation Lone Star arrests continues to revolve around allegations of mistreatment, financial waste and calls for an independent investigation and shutdown of the facility.
