ICE detention mortality platform launched amid rising migrant deaths

A new public platform has been launched to document mortality rates within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers. Developed by researcher Austin Kocher with support from Bishal Timsina of Relevant Research, the ICE Detention Mortality Panel organizes cases by state and facility using interactive maps and infographics.

Data indicates that since the start of the current administration, approximately 50 deaths have been recorded in ICE custody, averaging one death every nine days. The platform aims to provide a structured repository of validated data and metadata to allow for independent analysis of the detention system.

Parallel to these mortality concerns, reports highlight a series of arrests involving Venezuelan nationals under current immigration policies. These cases include individuals with pending asylum requests or family ties to the U.S., such as Bryan José Rojas Galofre and Alejandro Almeida, who were detained during routine activities like travel or work commutes.
