US ICE enforcement and detention mortality concerns

Overview

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has expanded its budget and personnel, leading to intensified enforcement actions against undocumented migrants. This expansion has coincided with reports of increased abuse and fatalities within detention facilities.

Following the fatal shooting of Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE officer in Houston, the United Nations called for the United States to protect human dignity and implement stronger independent oversight. In response to rising mortality concerns, a new public platform was launched to document and organize death rates within ICE custody. Data from this platform indicates approximately 50 deaths have been recorded since the start of the current administration, averaging one death every nine days.
