ICE faces criticism from Democratic lawmakers over detention practices
Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns regarding the treatment of detainees and children within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.
Representative Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM) recently conducted a visit to the Torrance County ICE Detention Facility to investigate detainee welfare. ICE responded to the visit by stating that the Congresswoman had signed a Facility Visitation Agreement and was provided a tour of requested areas, including medical services and food preparation. ICE officials noted that meetings with detainees must be scheduled in advance to ensure privacy and safety.
Separately, Representative Madeleine Dean (D-PA) accused ICE of inhumane practices and the abuse of children. Dean cited a specific case involving a five-year-old boy and his father who were detained during a vehicle stop in Texas. Dean characterized the circumstances surrounding such detentions as a “despicable web” and called for meaningful immigration reform.
