US ICE detention facility oversight and criticism
Overview
Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns regarding the treatment of detainees and children within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.
Representative Teresa Leger Fernández conducted a tour of the Torrance County ICE detention facility in New Mexico to investigate welfare concerns, including water quality and skin outbreaks. Leger Fernández reported that the visit was “very sterile” and alleged that officials from ICE and CoreCivic prevented her from speaking directly with detainees. ICE responded by stating the congresswoman was provided a “comprehensive tour tailored to the specific areas she had requested to see,” noting that security protocols require meetings with detainees to be scheduled in advance.
In a separate matter, Representative Madeleine Dean accused ICE of inhumane practices and the abuse of children, citing a specific case involving a five-year-old boy and his father detained during a vehicle stop in Texas. Dean characterized such circumstances as a “despicable web” and called for immigration reform.
