ICE footage and investigations spark controversy in California

Two separate incidents involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California have drawn scrutiny following conflicting accounts of use of force.

In Long Beach, footage released by ICE shows Ricardo Gonzalez tackling a federal officer during an operation. This video contradicts earlier claims by local officials and activists who alleged Gonzalez was an unprovoked victim struck by an unmarked vehicle while riding an e-bike. The incident led to protests at Long Beach City Hall and calls for investigations from California lawmakers, including Representative Robert Garcia and Senator Alex Padilla.

In Woodland, near Sacramento, local police have launched a criminal investigation into an incident involving 37-year-old Antonio Moreida. While the Department of Homeland Security stated that an agitator jumped onto the hood of an ICE vehicle, Woodland Police Chief Ryan Kinnan indicated that available surveillance and bystander footage contradicts the agency’s account. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the encounter.
