ICE enforcement and use of force controversies

Recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in California and Washington have drawn public outcry and sparked investigations into the agency’s use of force.

In late October, reports emerged of the arrests of elderly undocumented immigrants. In Orange County, California, Serafín Trinidad Ortega was detained during a physical struggle with federal agents while traveling to a family celebration. In Airway Heights, Washington, José Luis Arias was arrested while accompanying his grandson, an incident that drew community concern regarding the impact on the child.

Subsequent incidents in California have led to direct disputes over agency accounts. In Long Beach, ICE released footage showing Ricardo Gonzalez tackling a federal officer, contradicting local claims that he was struck by an unmarked vehicle while on an e-bike. Meanwhile, in Woodland, local police have launched a criminal investigation into an encounter involving Antonio Moreida. While the Department of Homeland Security claimed an agitator jumped onto an ICE vehicle, the Woodland Police Chief stated that surveillance and bystander footage appear to contradict the agency’s version of events.
