Iceland rejects EU accession negotiations in referendum

Icelandic voters have rejected the commencement of accession negotiations with the European Union following a referendum held on August 29. Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir stated that the result serves as a lesson, noting that the population appears satisfied with the current European Economic Area (EEA) agreement, which provides access to the single market and Schengen membership without requiring full EU membership or political decision-making power in Brussels.

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos expressed regret over the outcome, emphasizing that while the EU's attractiveness remains high due to trade relations, the decision must be respected. Kos noted that the referendum highlights the need for the EU to address public anxieties regarding enlargement. She suggested that the Union must ensure new members adhere to European values and rules, mentioning discussions regarding new protective clauses in future accession treaties to prevent internal destabilization.
