European nationalist and eurosceptic momentum

Political developments in Iceland and Germany have contributed to a resurgence of nationalist rhetoric and euroscepticism within Europe. In Iceland, a referendum held on August 29 resulted in voters rejecting the commencement of accession negotiations with the European Union. Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir indicated that the population appears satisfied with the existing European Economic Area (EEA) agreement, which allows for single market access and Schengen membership without full EU integration.

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos expressed regret over the Icelandic result but stated the decision must be respected, noting that the outcome highlights the need for the EU to address public anxieties regarding enlargement.

These events, alongside a significant electoral victory for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Saxony-Anhalt, have bolstered the ‘Europe of nations’ model. This concept, supported by sovereignist parties, prioritizes national interests and borders over deeper political and economic integration, though critics warn it could threaten the euro and the single market.
